Hunger Games

Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins
2008
384 pages

Summary: In a future North American distopian society, 12 Districts are ruled by a strong capitol called Panem. In order to keep the Districts in line, a boy and girl from every district are required to come to Panem and compete in an annual ‘to the death’ competition called the Hunger Games. Katniss, from District 12, volunteers when her sister is selected. While good at hunting, Katniss is surprised to find herself becoming an actual contender in the Games. What perhaps is more surprising to Katniss is her growing attachment to the other District 12 competitor, Peeta, who has always been in love with her. In order to win, Katniss must make choices that will take her further from the person she started as while she struggles to not only survive and outlast other players, but balance between the love story the audience wants to see and her genuine feelings for Peeta.

Review: With adventure, intense action and a little romance, what’s not to like? I really enjoyed reading Hunger Games and thought Suzanne Collins did a great job on all levels. There is a strong and compelling setting, the characters are loveable and rich with back story and growth, the dialogue is sharp and engaging and the pacing and plot development are balanced. The suspense of both whether or not Katniss will survive and her budding relationship with Peeta is at times unbearable. This book will appeal to any YA reader of both genders. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series called Catching Fire.

Other books by Suzanne Collins: Catching Fire, and The Underland Chronicles

If you like Hunger Games you might also enjoy: Exodus by Julie Bertagna, Sharp North by Patrick Cave, The House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, The Uglies by Scott Westerfield, Feed by M.T Anderson and The Unnameables by Ellen Booraem
