This rating system is a combination of the VOYA rating system, Katie’s from Katie’s Book Blog and a bit of my own.


Writing (W) – pacing, style, point of view etc

1. Better editing or work by the author might warrant a 2

2. Readable, without serious defect

3. Better than most, marred by occasional lapses

4. Hard to imagine it being any better

Characters (C) – voice, development, secondary characters, etc

Plot (P) – does it make sense, gaps, ending, relevance and engaging?

Originality (O)

1. Have I read this before?

2. Similar to many other books but with distinguishing features

3. Broad general appeal

4. Every YA (who reads) was dying to read it yesterday

Cover (CR)

1. Not sure why they picked it

2. Okay but I’ve seen similar

3. Eye catching and increases interest in book

4. Amazing, eye catching and innovative

Grade Level Interest

M – grades 6 to 7

J – grades 8 to 9

S – grades 10-12
